Gugu Mbatha-Raw (* 1983 in Oxford as Gugulethu Sophia Mbatha ;) is a British actress .

Life

Mbatha-Raw was born in 1983 in Oxford as the daughter of Anne Raw from England and Patrick Mbatha from South Africa and studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art from 2001 to 2004 . From 2005, she made her first appearances in television series and films and at the Royal Exchange Theater in Manchester. Among other things, she appeared in a production of Romeo and Juliet alongside Andrew Garfield as Juliet . She was nominated for the Manchester Evening News Award for Best Actress for her performance . In the same year she also appeared at the Royal Exchange as Cleopatra in Antonius and Cleopatra .

In 2010 Mbatha-Raw took over the leading role in the u. a. TV series Undercovers produced by JJ Abrams , which was canceled after one season. This was followed by a small supporting role in the film Larry Crowne . In 2012, Mbatha-Raw took on the female lead in the first season of the television series Touch at the side of Kiefer Sutherland . In the second season, however, she was no longer part of the regular cast.

In 2013, Mbatha-Raw starred as Dido Elizabeth Belle in the movie Dido Elizabeth Belle . For this she was u. a. received the British Independent Film Award . Other film and television roles followed, including appearances in Shattering Truth (2015), Beauty and the Beast (2017) and The Time Puzzle (2018). In the 2016 television series Black Mirror , she took on the role of Kelly in the highly acclaimed episode San Junipero .
