Gustav Sander

Gustav Sander (born September 28, 1881 in Duisburg , † November 29, 1955 ) was a German trade unionist and politician ( SPD ).

Life and work

Sander, a dock worker by profession, was a union member and was given long prison sentences because of his participation in strikes before 1914. From 1919 to 1933 he was a full-time union secretary at the Duisburg port workers' association. After the takeover of the Nazis he was arrested for illegal party work.

After the Second World War, Sander took part in the rebuilding of the trade unions in Duisburg. Since 1945 he was a board member of the unified union of German workers in Greater Duisburg, then a member of the DGB board there and later its chairman.

Sander, who had belonged to the SPD since 1906, was a councilor for the city of Duisburg from 1928 to 1933 and from 1945 onwards. He was a member of the German Bundestag during its first legislative period, i.e. from 1949 to 1953. In parliament he represented the constituency of Duisburg II , in which he was directly elected with 36.6% of the vote.
