Gustel Stein

Gustel Stein (born January 14, 1922 in Sankt Goarshausen , † February 18, 2010 ) was a artist. He created numerous concrete and leaded glass windows , wall paintings and mosaics for churches and public buildings all over Germany, especially in Mainz and the surrounding area. His work includes religious, profane and abstract large and small format works. Since 1952 he has designed works of art in more than 70 churches and other public places and private rooms in the Rheingau, on the Nahe, in Rheinhessen and Central Hesse.

Life

Gustel Stein was born in 1922 as the son of a master painter. After his school education he completed a manual training in his father's company until 1940. From 1941 to 1945 he did military service. From 1947 to 1952 he attended the Landeskunstschule Mainz and was a master student with Peter Paul Etz for two semesters . This was followed by trips to France, Italy and Spain. From 1950 to around 1980 he turned to glass painting and from around 1957 to painting. Between 1960 and 1968 he was given a teaching position at the University Institute for Art and Crafts Education at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz . Stein worked in particular with emulsion paint, synthetic resin, sand plaster, acrylic paints and varnishes. In 2008 Stein donated 104 works on paper and paintings to the Mainz State Museum , including still lifes, landscapes, nudes, drafts for glass windows and non-representational works. The Landesmuseum 2013 showed a representative cross-section of it under the title Gustel Stein (1922–2010). Works on paper .
