Origin of the district

The name courtyards goes back to the medieval division of the area into the Vorderen Hof ( Pfäffikon SZ ) and the Hinteren Hof ( Wollerau ), both of which originally belonged to the monastery of Einsiedeln . During the Helvetic Republic (1798-1803), the two farms were part of the Rapperswil district in the short-lived canton of Linth . In 1803 the farms became independent administrative units again under the names Pfäffikon District and Wollerau District . After the Sonderbund War , the canton of Schwyz received a new cantonal constitution, on the basis of which the two "courtyards" were merged on February 27, 1848 in the new district of Höfe . The involuntary merger led to a compromise in the determination of the district capital: Wollerau is the capital for four years and Pfäffikon for two years - based on the size and importance of the rear and the front courtyard.

The regulation applies to this day, even if the meaning has in fact been reduced to the title; the district administration (notary's office, district chancellery, district court) is located in the new town hall of Wollerau, only the location of the annual district community assembly changes between Wollerau and Freienbach.
