The port, founded in 1971, spreads over 460 hectares 30 km along the Sambre and the Charleroi – Brussels Canal . The port is connected to the Flemish waterway network via this canal.

The waterside handling of the port reached 1 million tons in 1974, but then decreased steadily until 1992. In 1992 about 0.45 million tons were handled on the water side. From 1992 to 2001, the throughput rose to around 2.5 million tons. Since then, the envelope has leveled off there.

In 2006, 2.735 million tons were transshipped in the port of Charleroi. The total throughput including trucks and trains, which has increased steadily since the company was founded, was around 7 million tons in 2006. Minerals and building materials (39%), solid fuels (24%) and metallurgical products (20%) make up the majority of the handling.
