The groundbreaking for the Halle port railway took place on June 2, 1893, and on January 9, 1895, Hallesche Hafenbahn AG was able to start operations between the Thuringian freight yard in Halle via Turmstrasse (later Halle Süd industrial station) and Sophienhafen . The six kilometer long freight connection line ran in a long arc to the west and south around the city of Halle and crossed the meter-gauge tram four times. The route was reserved exclusively for freight traffic. To increase the utilization and operation of several industrial plants were built from the station Turmstraße the 1.2 kilometer-long industrial railway Halle (Saale) in the track width of 1,000 millimeters , which led to the Tower Street following the north. The port railway company merged with the Halle-Hettstedter Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft in 1897 .

With the construction of the port railway, the Sophienhafen gained in importance in its function as a goods transshipment point. In addition, the railway supplied the (older) municipal gas works on the Saline Island, as well as the electricity and gas works on the wood yard with coal. In 1926 the port was largely closed. Remnants of the track systems are still in Hafenstrasse today.

From April to July 1945, troops of the American armed forces were stationed in railroad cars at Turmstrasse station.

On March 25, 1952, there was a serious railway accident at the Beesener Strasse level crossing. A tram of line 1 (motor vehicle no. 124, side car no. 224) was hit by the locomotive of the approaching port railway while crossing the level crossing. There were several dead and seriously injured. The level crossing was then equipped with a traffic light system. Before they went into operation, the conductor of the motor vehicle had to get out and make sure that no train was approaching the port railway. Only then was the tram allowed to pass the level crossing.

After the political change in the GDR , the port railway was shut down on July 8, 1991 and dismantled in sections as part of road construction work. Remnants of track can still be found in the area of the Turmstrasse station. Parts of the route are now used as a footpath and bike path. The port railway bridge ( 51 ° 28 ′ 17 ″  N , 11 ° 57 ′ 24.6 ″  E ), which was built in steel construction for the transition across the Saale between Böllberger Weg and Pulverweiden and consists of a girder , is now available to pedestrians.
