Haffouz

Haffouz ( Arabic حفوز, DMG Ḥaffūz ) is a city in Tunisia . It is located about 40 km west of Kairouan on Highway 12 in the Kairouan Governorate , in the center of the country. In 2004 the municipality had 8,225 inhabitants. Haffouz is the capital of a delegation with 43,792 inhabitants.

The place is about 300  m above sea level and is surrounded by mountains. To the north of the city lies the Djebel Ousselat and south of the Djebel Trozza , which are part of the Dorsal . Haffouz is an agricultural center , mainly olives and almonds are harvested. The necessary water comes from the El Haouareb reservoir , which is fed by Wadi Merguellil . The average annual rainfall in the region is 300 mm, but it falls unevenly and mostly fluctuates between 200 and 400 mm.

During the 2010/2011 revolution in Tunisia , violent clashes broke out between demonstrators and police in Haffouz.
