Hagen Fleischer ( Greek Χάγκεν Φλάισερ ; born January 8, 1944 in Vienna ) is a German - Greek historian.

Life

Fleischer studied history and journalism at the Free University of Berlin , where he received his doctorate in 1977. He has lived in Greece since 1977, and since 1985 he has been a German citizen. He worked as a correspondent for various German newspapers. As a research assistant he worked for the Academy of Sciences in Athens. From 1981 to 1991 he taught at the University of Crete and from 1987 to 1988 he was a Greek representative of the International Commission of Historians on the Waldheim Affair .

Since 1992 Fleischer has been teaching at the University of Athens as a professor of modern history with a focus on 20th century Greek history. His research focuses on the National Socialist occupation policy in Europe and the consequences of the Second World War .

In 2018 he was awarded the Cross of Merit First Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .
