history

The Haigern seen from Talheim

During the War of the Palatinate Succession , from the end of May to the beginning of June 1693, the Haigern served the commander-in-chief of the imperial troops, Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm von Baden-Baden ( Türkenlouis ), as the headquarters in repulsing attempts by French troops marched west of Heilbronn to cross over to the eastern bank of the Neckar .

The development of the mountain goes back to the Lords of Gemmingen . Philipp von Gemmingen acquired larger pieces of land there from 1786, including 34 acres from the Talheim community. In the late 18th century he had a castle-like building ( Steinernes Haus ) built there with numerous outbuildings. The shell construction was completed in 1791, the year the topping-out ceremony was celebrated. However, the client died in 1800 before the estate was completed. With the entire estate, the shell was also sold for demolition in 1813. The buyer, Jakob Langjahr, had the building demolished. After a major fire in Flein on April 14, 1815, Langjahr made the stones available to rebuild the ten destroyed houses.

Later, an agricultural property was built on the Haigern, which developed into a popular excursion destination with a restaurant by the late 19th century. With a contract dated August 26, 1924, the Heilbronn-Land youth welfare office acquired the property and in the following year set up a children's rest home for 15 children. In 1927 an extension was built, increasing the capacity of the rest home to 45 children. The farm on the property was retained to supply the rest home. In 1938, the city of Heilbronn acquired the facility, but later sold it back to private customers. The property was badly damaged by artillery fire towards the end of the Second World War, but was then repaired. From the 1950s onwards, a Catholic children's home for 600 children a year and a church meeting center were built, and there is also a winery on the slope towards Talheim.

Every year at the Trollinger Marathon , the Haigern, the highest point of the half marathon and marathon, is crossed by thousands of participants.

The Haigern live charity open-air festival, which has been organized annually by the Friends of Kinderfreizeit Haigern eV since 2009, is also well known across the region .

From the exposed altitude you have an impressive view over the southern Heilbronn basin and the western ridges of the Heuchelberg and the Stromberg . In the south, the view extends to the Stuttgart TV tower .
