The Halensee (formerly Hollow Lake ) is a lake of small Grunewaldseenkette in the district of Grunewald of the Berlin district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf , near the western end of the Kurfuerstendamm . It has an area of about 57,000 m² and is up to ten meters deep. The lake has no natural inflow and is partly fed by groundwater; Street sewage is fed into the lake via three discharge points.

The amusement park Lunapark , which opened in 1909 on the east bank of Lake Halensee , was a popular excursion destination in Berlin and Europe's largest amusement park until the First World War . On February 4, 1897, the oldest recorded ice hockey game in Germany took place on the lake , when the Academic Sports Club Berlin beat a student team 11: 4.

The National Socialists closed the Luna Park . Halenseestrasse was built on part of its site. The area directly on the northeastern bank of the lake was then redesigned into a landscape park by Joseph Pertl in 1938 ; this time "Halensee park" called green area is now predominantly in the summer as lawn among other nude bathers without nudist used -Zwang. In 1997 the park was named after the Prussian politician and entrepreneur Karl Rudolf Friedenthal . A plaque on a large boulder in the park provides information about the background to the renaming. Since the lido opposite was sold to a private person and converted into a beach bar, Friedenthalpark and a path in Wallotstrasse behind the Wissenschaftskolleg have been free access to the lake. Since 2013 there has been a footbridge between Friedenthalpark and the Uferwanderweg in the Trabener Straße green area. The riverside hiking trail on the property at Trabener Straße 70a has been open to park visitors since 2009.

Construction work on a new sewage treatment plant , which is supposed to improve the water quality of Lake Halensee over the long term, began in September 2005 and was scheduled for one year and was completed in April 2008 . About 30 trees were felled in Friedenthalpark for an additional soil filter system. The sunbathing lawn, which was reduced by about 300 m² by a construction fence during construction work, is available again in full size. As the owner of the city motorway, the federal government finances 61 percent of the estimated three million euros for the filter system. The state of Berlin will bear the rest.

Water quality

The Halensee, one of the cleanest lakes in Berlin when the weather is dry, had one of the highest germ loads of all Berlin's lakes in the past after rainfall . This resulted from the inflow of rainwater from the surrounding streets, especially from the feeder to the Berlin city ring bordering Friedenthalpark , which had flowed unexplained through the defective sewage treatment plant on Trabener Straße since the 1980s . For decades, the rainwater from the sealed road surfaces at Halensee, and thus germs and pollutants, have been washed more or less directly into the lake. Everything that remains on the shore at the end also ends up in the lake. The closure of the overflow barrier on the AVUS , located northwest of the Halensee, in 1996 more than halved the catchment area of the lake to around 67  hectares, thereby relieving the burden, but did not solve the basic problem. With the entry into force of the EU Bathing Water Ordinance in 2003, a bathing ban was imposed in order to avoid sanctions because of the frequent exceeding of limit values during water checks . However, the bathing ban is often disregarded.

Current situation

Soil filter system

The district office of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf lifted the bathing ban on May 1, 2016 after twelve years, because the water quality has improved thanks to the water company's filter system. The lido is operated as the Ku'damm Beach bar by the host of the neighboring Cappuccino Grand Café restaurant . However, the entrance fee with rent for a deck chair is twelve euros, so that the former character of a public bath has been lost. Children up to eight years of age have free entry.
