Collars are straps that are worn around the neck as a piece of jewelry or for restraint . They are mainly used for restraint on animals or in the BDSM area.

The materials used are metal , fabric and different colored leather types . By far the most popular use is (in which the collar hunter language and Kynologie also Halsung called) for dogs .

Different groups use this type of jewelry to express their beliefs. This is particularly common with furrys , punks , goths and similar groups, e.g. B. in the form of rivet collars .

Dog collars

The best known use is in the dog collar. Dog collars are mostly used to guide or restrict the movement of a dog. They also offer one or more eyelets to which a leash can be attached.

In addition to the classic collar, you can find collars in a wide variety of designs on the market. These include flea collars, swim collars, spiked collars, electrical collars and much more. They are often provided with dog tags and address tags in order to comply with the owners' tax obligations ( dog tax ) or to facilitate the identification of the animal.

Classic collars

Classic collars are made of materials such as leather, synthetic leather, nylon fabric or the like. They offer an eyelet for attaching a leash and a closure. A tab through which one end of the collar can be pulled is typically used as the closure. As an alternative to the tab, a locking buckle is often used, which is also referred to as a quick-release fastener for collars.

Spiked collars

Dog collars are also available on the market in designs with inwardly directed spikes and as restricted or unrestricted choke collars. There are significant concerns about spiked collars and unrestricted stranglers due to animal welfare, and the risk of injury is not insignificant. When directed outwards, they are used in herd guard dogs as protection against wolves.

Electric collars

In addition to traditional dog collars, there are also radio-controlled models that allow the owner of the animal to trigger an electric shock or a beep. For this purpose they are equipped with a radio receiver, a power supply and electrodes. The electrodes mostly have the shape of several rounded metal rods pointing inwards on the collar. These penetrate the animal's fur and make contact with its skin. Such tele-stimulators are to be assessed critically from the point of view of animal welfare. They are forbidden in Germany Animal Welfare Act § 3 No. 11, Austria and Switzerland.

Flea collars

Flea collars are characterized by the fact that their chemical impregnation can keep fleas away from dogs. Typically, a flea collar is only worn as an addition to a simple collar. As a rule, they are resistant to rain and are only used for a certain period of time, usually three to seven months.

BDSM

In the BDSM field, collars are often worn by subs. In addition to being used in bondage , they often symbolize willingness to submit or belonging to a top. Depending on the purpose and symbolic meaning, the collars can be equipped with O- or D-rings . For example, they allow a leash to be attached to a collar. In addition to the functional attachment option without symbolic meta-level (so-called "pure work collars"), the collars and their rings can stand for various symbolic meanings.
