Haltingen ( Alemannic : Haldige ) is a district of Weil am Rhein in the district of Lörrach with almost 8,000 inhabitants on an area of ​​7.78 km 2 . After the core city, it is the largest district in terms of both population and area.

geography

Haltingen is divided into two main parts by the Rhine Valley Railway . The upper village, the older part of Haltingen, is east of the railway line, the lower village to the west of it. There are different settlements in both parts, such as B. the hillside area in Oberdorf or the area Im Rad , a former railroad workers' settlement , which is surrounded by track systems and whose base is therefore approximately circular. The settlements Burghölzli and Rebgarten also belong to Haltingen.

To the south of Haltingen is the core town of Weil am Rhein, to the northwest, on a foothill of the Tüllinger Berg , the district of Ötlingen . In the north, Haltingen borders the neighboring communities of Eimeldingen and Binzen .

history

Haltingen was first mentioned in 764 as Haholtinga . In 1065 the place came to the bishops of Basel , who later ceded their property to the monastery of St. Blasien . The lords of Rötteln had the place as a fief and so it came first to the Margraviate of Hachberg-Sausenberg and in 1503 to Baden . Since 1733, the district belongs Wüstung Hiltelingen to Haltingen. In the Gewann Im Schlössel was the Hiltelingen moated castle until 1678 .

Haltingen, like Weil, belonged to the Rötteln Oberamt and from 1809 to the Lörrach Oberamt . During the Second World War , the village was almost completely destroyed. For January 1, 1975 Haltingen was the then in Haltingerstrasse Mayor Walter Fribolin in the town of Weil am Rhein incorporated .

Haltingen water tower

Haltingen is a typical clustered village . Many of the houses in the village center are listed . The Church of St. George is on the eastern edge of the village . It is mentioned for the first time in 1139 in a bull by Pope Innocent II . The patronage of Saint George is mentioned for the first time in 1468. The church was rebuilt in the second half of the Reformation . St. George's Church suffered severe damage both during the Thirty Years' War and in the Battle of Friedlingen in 1702. The current shape of the nave and choir was given to the church in 1718.

The parish has had a Catholic parish church since 1937 . The Church of St. Maria is a five-axis hall building with an immediately adjoining apse . A bell tower with a gable roof rises on the south side .

Haltingen is located in the Markgräflerland , which is known for its wines. In Haltingen there is a wine cooperative whose most famous wine is the Haltinger Stiege . The four-kilometer-long Weinweg hamlet leads through the village and the western slopes of the vineyard area on Tüllinger Berg . Along the way, panels provide information about the vines and the development of viticulture.

One of the most striking buildings is the Haltingen water tower , which is located south of the village center at the marshalling yard and is equipped with a spherical container and was built at the beginning of the 20th century.

There are two primary schools in Haltingen, the Hans-Thoma-Schule in the lower village and the old school in the upper village, as well as two municipal kindergartens.
