In most cases, brake pads or brake shoes are pressed against the running surface , the rims or the brake disks of the vehicle wheels with a hand lever or a crank mechanism, and their rotational movement is reduced by the friction . The levers and cranks can operate the brake pads directly or via additional rods or cables .

In rail vehicles , the mechanical brake was originally designed as a handbrake.

In automotive engineering , the parking brake , which is usually manually operated, is also referred to as a handbrake .

For physically handicapped people who cannot use the standard pedals of their vehicle or can only use them to a limited extent, the service brake is often switched to manual operation. This is also referred to as a handbrake in this context , regardless of the possibility of confusion with the parking brake. In some vehicles (mainly Mercedes) the parking brake is also operated by a pedal.

Historically, the handbrake in automobiles was the emergency brake that should only be used in special cases, because it worked harder than the footbrake. Today it is the other way around.

Modern bicycles have at least one handbrake; see bicycle brake .

In the case of trams and railroad vehicles , the handbrake is used both to protect against escaping and to regulate the speed for certain shunting movements and to stop trains in the event of a faulty air brake . A distinction is made between floor-operated parking brakes, which can only be used to secure against unintentional movements, and hand brakes that can be operated from the vehicle, which can also be used while moving. They are operated from the vehicle are generally as spindle running brake and act directly (mechanically) on the brake pads of the vehicle. In bogie vehicles, the handbrake often only acts on one bogie. In newer railcars and locomotives in particular, a spring-loaded brake is often used as a parking brake instead of the spindle handbrake .
