The Haneburg is a two-wing residential castle made of red brick in the old town of Leer in East Frisia .

location

The castle is located at the end of the chestnut-lined Haneburgallee in the ensemble of the Dutch- influenced old town of Leer.

history

The Haneburg was built in 1570 by Claes Frese, the last Drost of Leerort, Leer, Hinte and Uttum as a mansion on the Blinke. Subsequently, the manor came into the possession of the Hane family, which is named today.

Countess Drost Joest Hane zu Stickhausen expanded the original transept in 1621 with a short wing in the Renaissance style of the Dutch style with an archway. The inscription above the archway to the residential castle, which can still be read today, reminds of this renovation: "In 1621 the army Joest Hane zu Werff, Lihr and Uttum Haubtling and Adde Frize built a house from Daughter zu Hinte and Grohthusen".

In 1671, Joest Hane's son Didrich Arend Hane completed the extension from 1621. The inscription above the main entrance reminds of this conversion: "Anno 1671 On June 3, Heer Didrich Arent Hane zu Lihr and Uttum Haubling and Mrs. Anna Margareta, born Baronne von Kniphausen, started this house to build and is sold on September 30th: Anno 1671. Symb: Dei Gratia Fortitudo Mea. "

In 1908 the city of Leer bought the Haneburg castle. In June 1912 the premises of the Heimatschutzverein in Haneburg were inaugurated. In 1920 the Association for Homeland Security and Local History bought Haneburg from the city of Leer. After extensive renovations, the local history museum is opened in the Haneburg in October 1926. As early as September 1934, the city of Leer made use of its repurchase right and bought back the Haneburg castle, which was rented to the Reichsnährstand shortly afterwards on October 1, 1934. In 1935 the Haneburg was rebuilt and renovated and a second transept was added. On January 8, 1936, the SA farmers' college was inaugurated in Haneburg. From 1941 the Haneburg was used as a military hospital.

After the Second World War, the building was used as a retirement home. In 1973 the district of Leer took over the building, which was threatened with decay, and extensively renovated it until 1976. Today the Haneburg serves as the seat of the office and seminar building of the adult education center for the city and the district of Leer eV and is used temporarily for art exhibitions and conferences.

The historical interiors of the castle have not been preserved. A tour of the outdoor facilities is possible.
