Hanging Garden is a Finnish death-doom and gothic metal band from Helsinki that was formed in 2004.
history
The band was founded in the summer of 2004 by the singer Ari Nieminen and the bassist Matti Reinola. A short time later, the drummer Janne Jukarainen and the guitarist Mikko Kolari joined the cast. The following winter the band wrote their first songs. After Reinolas and Jukarainen's previous band Greyscale broke up, they were able to concentrate completely on Hanging Garden in spring 2005. In the winter the band wrote their first album, while Saku Manninen joined the band as another guitarist. The album was released in February 2006 at the time of the Finnish Metal Expo . A version of the demo with two songs was sent to various labels, while an official three-song version was released two months later. Through the demo, the group got a contract with Spikefarm Records . In February 2007, the label released the debut album Inherit the Eden . The album also features keyboard sounds that bassist Reinola recorded. In 2008 the band took part in Spinefeast at Sea , a festival on a cruise ship that went from Helsinki to Tallinn in Estonia. In addition to Hanging Garden, Children of Bodom , Ensiferum , Warmen , Agonizer , Viikate and Murena also took part in this festival organized by Spinefarm Records . While the band was writing their second album, Jussi Hämäläinen joined the band as the new guitarist and replaced Manninen. In July 2009 the band went to the studio to record the album TEOTWAWKI . The album, which was released on Spikefarm Records in November 2009, was mixed and mastered by Magnus Lindberg at Tonteknik Recording in Sweden . In spring 2010, singer Nieminen left the band and was replaced by Toni Toivonen. Shortly thereafter, drummer Jukarainen left the line-up, whereupon Antti Ruokola came as a replacement. In November 2011 the group went to the Spleen Studio to record the drum tracks for the third album. At the same time bassist Matti Reinola left the band and was replaced by Jussi Kirves. After the band signed a contract with the German label Lifeforce Records in September 2012 , the album At Every Door was released . Since bassist Reinola had left the band and he had always played the keyboard on the previous albums, Nino Hynninen joined the band as keyboard player.

According to the band's biography, the group was formed to play slow doom metal. On TEOTWAWKI , the band tried to be rougher compared to their previous album. In addition, she tried to incorporate English death and doom metal influences, as well as post metal and post rock influences and hardcore punk- like vocals. On At Every Door the band let influences from groups like Cult of Luna and Sigur Rós flow in. According to laut.de, the band play Doom Metal, with aggressive vocals that are reminiscent of sludge or post-hardcore . On Inherit the Eden, according to Christian Hector from Metal Hammer , the band plays music that is atmospheric and melodic, but has no recognition value. According to Katrin Riedl from Metal Hammer, the band plays a mixture of Doom and Dark Metal on At Every Door . The group creates variety in the songs through cleverly placed tempo changes .
According to Stormbringer, Hanging Garden play Death Doom “with subtle but noticeable Gothic influences”. Metal Inside also emphasizes the connection between Death Doom and Gothic and compares Hanging Garden with Paradise Lost .
