The Hanisch Islands ( Arabic جزر حنيش Dschuzur Hanīsch , DMG ǧuzur Ḥanīš ) are a group of islands in the Red Sea . A large part of the archipelago belongs to Yemen ( al-Hudaida governorate ).

geography

The group comprises 23 islands and rocks with a total area of 190 km². The largest island in the group is Zuqar Island in the north , followed by Great Hanish Island (Jazīrat Hanīsch al-Kubrā) in the south and Little Hanish Island (Jazīrat Hanīsch as-Sughrā) between the two largest. The other islands are much smaller.

administration

The group of islands belongs to the districts at-Tuhayta (northern islands) and al-Chaucha .

history

Originally the Hanisch Islands were part of the Ottoman Empire and were claimed by its successor, Turkey . However, from 1923 to 1941 they were administered from the Italian colony of Eritrea. After the escape of the Italian colonial troops, the islands were administered by the British , again from Eritrea. Since the 1970s, the islands have been claimed by Yemen and Ethiopia , which annexed Eritrea in 1961. Some of the Hanisch Islands served as a supply base and starting point for attacks on the mainland in Eritrea's struggle for freedom against Ethiopia.

From the independence of South Yemen in 1967 to the unification with North Yemen , the islands belonged to the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen , and from 1990 to Yemen.

In 1995/1996, the entire archipelago was claimed by Eritrea , which had become independent in 1991 , which led to a conflict between states with a military dimension. The attempted conquest of the archipelago by Eritrea failed, however. After long negotiations, the islands were awarded to Yemen by an international arbitration tribunal in 1998, with the exception of a few smaller ones that now belong to Eritrea.
