Hans-Christoph Schmitt

Hans-Christoph Schmitt (born November 11, 1941 in Tübingen ; † July 6, 2020 ) was a Protestant theologian and Old Testament scholar . Most recently, he taught as a professor for the Old Testament at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg .

Life

Schmitt studied theology and oriental studies in Marburg , Heidelberg and Tübingen from 1960 to 1965 . In 1970 he received his doctorate from the theological faculty of the University of Marburg with a traditional-historical study of the prophet Elischa . In 1975 he completed his habilitation in the Department of Protestant Theology at the University of Marburg for the subject of the Old Testament. His positions as an academic teacher were from 1979 to 1987 the professorship for Protestant theology with a focus on biblical theology at the University of Augsburg and from 1987 to 2007 the professorship for Old Testament theology at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. From 2007 Schmitt was emeritus .

The main areas of work of Schmitt were the research of the history books of the Old Testament ( Pentateuch , Book of Joshua , Book of Judges , Samuel and Kings) and the question of the contemporary meaning of Old Testament theology. He was internationally recognized as the editor of the renowned " Journal for Old Testament Science ". In 2005 he published an "Old Testament Workbook" which provides an overview of the most representative research positions on the main features of the history of Israel and the Old Testament scriptures.
