Hans-Joachim Weirather (born February 18, 1959 in Memmingen ) is a German politician. He is a member of the Free Voters and District Administrator of the Unterallgäu district .

Life

Hans-Joachim Weirather grew up in Fellheim in Upper Swabia . His father Hans was a civil engineer and his mother Antonia came from a farm . He has two other siblings. In his community of Fellheim he is a member of the Fellheim Synagogue Support Group . Weirather is married, has three children and lives in Fellheim. His hobbies are mountain hiking , cross-country skiing, jogging and skiing in South Tyrol .

education and profession

From 1965 he attended elementary school in Fellheim . In 1979 he graduated from the Bernhard-Strigel-Gymnasium in Memmingen. From 1979 to 1980 he did military service . For general basic training he was in Landshut and later with the Mountain Medical Battalion 8 in Kempten (Allgäu) .

From 1980 to 1986 he studied civil engineering at the Technical University of Munich . Then he was construction manager at the Josef Hebel company in Memmingen. In 1989 he completed a two-year apprenticeship as a government architect. He then moved to the water management office in Kempten and from there to the water management office in Krumbach, where he was head of the regional department in Neu-Ulm . From 1992 to 1996 Weirather had a teaching position at the University of Augsburg in the field of civil engineering. In 1993 he was transferred to the Krumbach Water Management Office, where he was head of the regional department for the Neu-Ulm district. In October 1994 he became a building councilor. In December 1994 Weirather was transferred to the then Bavarian State Ministry for Regional Development and Environmental Issues (StMLU); Water Management Department, moved. His main tasks: administrative reform, organizational development, introduction of new management models in Bayer. Water management, controlling, cost and performance accounting. In July 2001 he became building director. From November 2001 to August 2002 he was seconded to the Bavarian State Chancellery to take part in the administrative management course. This nine-month full-time seminar is only allowed to be attended by selected prospective executives from all state ministries in the Free State.

Kempten Water Management Office

In December 2002, Weirather became head of the Kempten Water Management Office with around 180 employees. Here he implemented infrastructure projects, including flood protection. In 2004 he became senior construction director before he was elected district administrator of the Unterallgäu district in 2006. In the district assembly of Swabia he is a member of the youth committee.

District Administrator Unterallgäu

Since August 2006, Hans-Joachim Weirather has been the district administrator of the Unterallgäu district. During his first term of office, a climate protection concept was drawn up in order to implement a long-term, targeted energy and climate protection policy. Even during Weirather's term of office, the Unterallgäu district worked together with the affected communities to provide comprehensive flood protection, especially in the Günztal. During Weirather's term of office, the Unterallgäu district spent over 25 million euros on the expansion and renovation of district roads and invested in local public transport and in the expansion of the Unterallgäu cycling and hiking region. With the district clinics in Mindelheim and Ottobeuren, the district has facilities that occupy a top medical position in the region. Cooperation with the Memmingen Clinic is intended to ensure comprehensive medical care in the Unterallgäu and Memmingen. In 2009, the board of directors of the Unterallgäu clinics, chaired by Weirathers, dismissed the then clinic director and a chief physician. The legal dispute ended with a settlement. The layoffs led to discussions in the population and in the media. Furthermore, the board of directors decided to close the medical care center in Babenhausen . In the district town of Mindelheim, however, it could remain open.

The Free Voters Unterallgäu nominated Weirather on January 26, 2012 as a candidate for the district election on April 22, 2012. On April 22, 2012 he was confirmed in office. In the district election in 2020 , he did not run; his successor from May 1, 2020 is Alex Eder .
