Hans-Ulrich Thamer (born January 1, 1943 in Rotenburg an der Fulda ) is a German historian .

life and work

Hans-Ulrich Thamer studied history , classical philology and political science at the Philipps University of Marburg and the Free University of Berlin . After the state examination in 1968, he worked with Ernst Nolte in Marburg in 1971 with the dissertation Revolution and Reaction in French Social Criticism of the 18th Century. Linguet, Mably, Babeuf to Dr. phil. PhD. In 1980 he received his habilitation with Michael Stürmer at the Institute for History of the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg on the social and intellectual history of French early socialism.

From 1983 until his retirement in 2011 he taught as a full professor ( C-4 ) for modern and contemporary history at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster. Since his retirement, Thamer has been a senior professor at the Westphalian Wilhelms University. His students include a. Frank Becker , Jan Nikolas Dicke, Ewald Frie , Thomas Großbölting , Peter Hoeres , Markus Köster, Armin Owzar , Rudolf Schlögl , Michael Wedekind, Gisela Weiß and Alexandra-Eileen Wenck. Since 1991 Thamer has also been a full member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia . Together with Simone Erpel and Klaus-Jürgen Sembach, he curated the exhibition Hitler and the Germans. National community and crime , which took place from October 2010 to February 2011 in the German Historical Museum in Berlin.

His standard work Seduction and Violence. Deutschland 1933–1945 appeared in 1986 and thus at the same time as the so-called Historikerstreft , which was triggered by the theses of Thamer's doctoral supervisor Ernst Nolte . Thamer's work, however, received positive reviews from Rudolf Augstein and Julius H. Schoeps , which is why Thamer was not involved in the heated debates. According to Augstein, he presented a "balanced and understandable history of the Third Reich."

His main research interests are National Socialism and European Fascism , the French Revolution , the history of ideas and socialism in France in the 18th and 19th centuries, and the cultural history of collections, exhibitions and museums.
