Hans-Ulrich Wagner

Hans-Ulrich Wagner (born 1962 ) is a German media scientist .

Life

Hans-Ulrich Wagner studied German and theology at the Universities of Bamberg and Münster. He worked as a freelance literary critic and publicist. In 1996 he received his doctorate in Bamberg with a thesis on the radio play program of the immediate post-war period 1945–1949. He then worked as a research assistant at the German Broadcasting Archive in Frankfurt am Main. There he carried out the DFG project on Günter Eich's radio work and curated an exhibition entitled “Remigranten und Rundfunk 1945–1955”.

Since December 2000 he has been working at the Media History Research Center (formerly “Research Center for the History of Broadcasting in Northern Germany”) in Hamburg. In August 2005 he became its director. He teaches at the University of Hamburg in the Department of Language, Literature, Media I.

Wagner's research interests cover many areas of media-mediated public communication from a historical perspective. His focus is on historical media impact research and media-mediated culture of remembrance, the relationship between radio and literature and, for some years now, so-called "sound studies".

Memberships

Since 1996 Wagner has been a member of the jury “Radio Play Prize of the War Blind - Prize for Radio Art”. He is a member of the board of the “Study Group for Broadcasting and History”. From 2007 to 2011 he was its first chairman. He is part of the editorial team of the specialist journal Medien & Kommunikationwissenschaft .
