Hans-Werner Altmann (born June 7, 1916 in Herford ; † July 31, 2011 in Würzburg ) was a German pathologist .

Life

Altmann, born in Herford in 1916, studied medicine in Berlin , Würzburg , Freiburg im Breisgau and Königsberg . In Freiburg he received his doctorate from the pathologist Franz Büchner . As part of his dissertation, he recognized the parafollicular C cells as part of the neuroendocrine system . Altmann completed his habilitation in Freiburg and then worked at the Technical University of Berlin , from 1952 as a full professor until he was appointed to the chair of pathology at the University of Würzburg in 1959 . In 1976 he was accepted into the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina for his fundamental work on the causation of lung cancer by radioactive substances .

His services include the introduction of modern cell biochemistry in the context of pathology. In the case of illnesses, for example, he established the principle of basically similar reactions in all cells. He also recognized the cell biological principle of autophagocytosis under light microscopy , coined the term “ lysigenic space” with regard to the cytoplasm and introduced the term “pathobiosis”, created in 1922 by the pharmacologist Wolfgang Heubner , into pathology.

Hans-Werner Altmann died on July 31, 2011 at the age of 95.
