Life

Bohnet lived in Stuttgart since 1939. After serving in the war and being a prisoner of war, he first studied architecture at the Technical University of Stuttgart from 1945 to 1946 . In 1946 he switched to sculpture and the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart . There he was Otto Baum's master student from 1948 until his graduation in 1950. Bohnet worked as a freelance artist in Stuttgart from 1950. In 1962 a scholarship took him to the Villa Massimo , Rome. 1979 to 1980 he received a scholarship from the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris.

Bohnet initially occupied himself with figurative sculpture until the mid-1960s. Since the late 1960s, his work has been determined by stereometric forms, especially since 1970 by the sphere and the cube and since the 1990s by the octahedron.

“Playing with the geometry of spaces has been a central theme in the work of the Stuttgart sculptor for decades. Bohnet literally "questions" the space and the geometric form, namely by breaking them up, "taking them apart", breaking them down into their individual parts. As a result of the sculptural "intervention", the sculptures, which are mainly made of stainless steel, turn their geometric structure, so to speak, their "construction principle" outwards. At the same time, the seemingly "perfect", now manipulated forms, reinforced by the use of shiny, reflective surfaces in places, provoke the viewer to reflect on their own perception - especially where they are convinced that they have already seen everything. »

Art stations

Hans Dieter Bohnet was involved in the planning for the 1993 International Horticultural Exhibition (IGA 93) in Stuttgart from the very beginning (since 1986) . During the realization phase, he created three art stations on the Wartberg :

  • The Egelsee with its numerous water features, including the Kugelsee with a ball fountain and the Fontänensee with a water organ.
  • The station Im Keuper , a landscape architectural installation made of a Keuper wall with a negative egg shape and a marble egg as well as a rock spring.
  • The station Unter den Stangen , a landscape-architectural installation made up of 17 measuring rods , the ends of which mark the height of 308 m above sea level in an amphitheater-like area.
