Hans Joachim Serfling

Hans Joachim Serfling (born January 24, 1913 ; † July 10, 2004 in Berlin ) was a German surgeon and university professor .

Life

From 1962 to 1978 he was a professor at the Charité in East Berlin . With Harry Wanke , he used the heart-lung machine for the first time at the Charité . His senior physician Manfred Schädlich was supposed to set up an independent department for anesthesiology and intensive therapy. Serfling mainly devoted himself to urological issues and, like his West German colleague August Mayer , dealt with hermaphroditism .

Serfling was from 1965 to 1967 chairman of the East Berlin section of the Berlin Surgical Society . In 1978 he received the Patriotic Order of Merit in Gold.
