Hans Leicht (born July 8, 1886 in Schäßburg , Transylvania , Kingdom of Hungary , † September 29, 1937 in Budapest ) was a lawyer , politician , poet and translator . He should not be confused with the German historian, orientalist and author of the 20th century of the same name.

Life

Hans Leicht was born on July 8, 1886 in Schäßburg. As a child, Leicht learned Hungarian at the Hungarian Reformed College in Cluj- Napoca. He later studied in Cluj , Berlin and Munich Law and graduated with doctorate from. Until he was called up for military service in World War I , Leicht worked as a lawyer in Schäßburg.

From his first marriage to Elisabeth Bacon, the daughter of Josef Bacon , three daughters were born - Elisabeth Hering , Irmgard Gitschner and Gerda Leicht.

In the political turmoil of the post-war period, Leicht resumed his Klausenburg relations in order to find acceptable solutions for the Germans in Transylvania. He was appointed by the Károlyi government as a consultant for the Saxon minority in the "Oberkommissariat Siebenbürgen". When Transylvania finally fell to Romania after the Treaty of Trianon , Leicht went to Budapest. Here he made contact with Béla Kun , his classmate from Cluj-Napoca, and became Undersecretary of State in the People's Commissariat for the National Minorities. Leicht enforced a German theater in Budapest, at the opening of which he gave the speech and worked out a new constitution for the Germans in what is now Burgenland, which, however, never came into force.

During the overthrow of the Soviet republic and the subsequent persecution of the Communists , Leicht remained as good as unmolested - acquitted by a court of honor. Since then, having been married for the second time, he has lived as a lawyer in Budapest and continued to strive for an understanding between Hungarians and Germans until his untimely death.

Leicht, a nephew of the poet Ernst Thullner , wrote numerous poems and occasional poems and made a name for himself in translations from Hungarian.
