Hans Loretan (born May 21, 1920 in Brig ; † April 13, 2008 in Brig) was a Swiss sculptor whose sacred works helped shape modern Catholic church building in Valais .

life and work

Hans Loretan grew up in modest circumstances in Upper Valais. His contact with the painter Ludwig Werlen (1884–1928), with whom his father was friends, was formative for him. After completing his apprenticeship as a carpenter in Brig, Hans Loretan began his studies at the Lucerne School of Applied Arts in 1941 . In 1947 he moved to the École des Beaux-Arts in Geneva, where in 1948 he won the competition for a sculpture for the 200th anniversary of the art academy. In 1949 he was accepted into Fritz Wotruba's master class at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.

From 1950 Hans Loretan began his work in Brig in the Fernanda vom Stockalperhaus. The architect Amédée Cachin and the painter Alfred Grünwald worked a little later in the same house, which gave the opportunity to collaborate on a specific basis.

As a drawing teacher, he taught at the secondary school in Visp , at the teachers ' college in Sion and for thirty years at the college in Brig. In 1958 he married Esther Guntern, the couple had five children.

Loretan's work was honored with the art prizes of the Upper Valais Rottenbund in 1971, the State of Valais in 1986 and the municipality of Brig-Glis in 2001.
