Life

Hans Lynge was born on September 6, 1906 in Nuuk as the son of the head catechist Niels Peter Salomon Lynge (1880-1965) and his wife Theodora Ane Sisilie Rosing (1883-1940). He was the second child of the couple, who had a total of eleven children. In addition, Hans had two half-sisters from his father's second marriage. He was a descendant of u. a. Anders Olsen , Christian Alexander Platou or Hans Egede . His older brother Klaus Lynge (1902–1981) sat like her father Niels on the regional council. His sister Cecilie Ane Andrea (1917–1999) was a writer. His brother-in-law was the politician and writer Nikolaj Rosing (1912–1976).

After finishing school, Hans Lynge attended Grønland's seminary , which he graduated in 1927. He was then employed as a catechist in Qaqortoq . On December 11, 1930, he married Marie Louise Mathilde Lund (1904–1996), daughter of the poet Henrik Lund (1875–1948) and Greenland's second oldest person Karoline Malene Justine Haldora Egede (1878–1979). In 1931, in his mid-twenties, he fell ill with tuberculosis and had to quit his job. As a result, he began to be active artistically and as a writer. At the same time, his political interest grew. In 1937 he was elected to the Qaqortoq Municipality Council. In the same year his first son Jørgen Niels Henrik Hans Lynge was born on Hans' 31st birthday , program director at Kalaallit Nunaata Radioa , who was later married to the politician Laannguaq Bolette Vahl (* 1943). In 1939 he was elected to Grønlands Landsråd , where he attended all meetings. On March 31, 1940, the younger son Torben Emil Lynge was born, who became a politician and whose eldest daughter is the writer in Nauja Lynge (* 1965). In 1945 he was re-elected, but left Qaqortoq shortly afterwards and was only able to attend one session before he was replaced by his deputy and brother Klaus Lynge. From 1945 to 1946 he was a member of the delegation in the consultation with the Grønlandsudvalg about the decolonization of the country. In the next period he finally fully concentrated on a career as an artist and attended Det Kongelige Danske Art Academy from 1947 to 1950 , where he was taught by Johannes Bjerg . Study trips took him to France and Italy . On March 25, 1961, he married the Danish doctor Inge Overgaard (* 1928), daughter of company assistant Holger Overgaard (1900–1964) and Henny Marie Mouritsen (1902–1981), who bore him no further children. He died on July 2, 1988 in Haderslev, Denmark.

As is typical of Greenlandic literature , Hans Lynge's literary works dealt with the traditional way of life of the Kalaallit and Greenlandic sagas . At least twelve of his works are dramas that he had performed as plays . He also wrote the opera Qunerseeq , the music of which he also composed. In his two volumes, Grønlands indre liv, from 1981 and 1988, he describes memories of his childhood and youth. As a sculptor, he designed busts of Augo Lynge and Lars Møller . To this end, he designed numerous churches and designed the frieze in Nuuk's town hall, consisting of 13 tapestries relating to the history of Greenland .

He was made a knight of the Dannebrog Order in 1972 and received the Godthåb Medaljen in 1978. In 1983 he was awarded the Greenland Culture Prize. The street Hans Lyngep Aqqusernga and the school Hans Lyngep Atuarfia in Nuuk are also named after him.
