Life

After graduating from the old school in Flensburg studied Johannsen philology , German and Danish literature at the universities of Göttingen , Heidelberg , Copenhagen and Kiel and graduated in 1932 with the promotion of Dr. phil. from. In Göttingen he became member in 1927 in Göttingen Wingolf . At the beginning of 1934 he took over the management of the head office of the German Nordmark libraries and in the same year of the municipal public library in Flensburg. At the end of the war, Johannsen and his family were with relatives in North Schleswig. The subsequent hermetic sealing of the border by the English made a return to Flensburg possible only in early 1947. In 1947, Johannsen's two previous management tasks were shared. Franz Schriewer took over the management of the headquarters of the Nordmark libraries . Hans Peter Johannsen was the library director of the Flensburg City Library until his retirement in 1973.

In addition to his professional activity, Johannsen has written and edited many books on borderland topics and questions in German and Danish literature.

Johannsen's special commitment was to overcome the strong contrasts in the German-Danish border region, which had come to a head as a result of the border struggle and the time of National Socialism. In 1950 he was one of the founders of the Grenzfriedensbund and was editor of the Grenzfriedenshefte from 1953 to 1961 . From 1961 to 1977 he was chairman of the Grenzfriedensbund. The Flensburg Days, which took place for the first time in 1954, and later the German-Danish Days, go back to his initiative and also served the goal of German-Danish understanding.
