Hans Schwabl

Hans Schwabl (born December 17, 1924 in Zell am See ; † April 2, 2016 ) was an Austrian classical philologist .

Life

After attending grammar school, Schwabl was drafted into military service. After his release from Soviet captivity, he began studying classical philology at the University of Vienna in 1947 . There he received his doctorate in 1951 and passed the teaching examination one year later. Until the end of 1952 he was a fellow of the British Council in Oxford and then a research assistant and assistant in Vienna. After completing his habilitation in 1958, he became a private lecturer until, in October 1960, he accepted a position as full professor and professor of classical philology at the Free University of Berlin . He followed another call, this time from his home university in Vienna, in 1968. There he was full professor and chair at the Institute for Classical Philology until his retirement in 1993 .

He was a member of the Advisory Board of the Görres Society , an honorary doctorate from the University of Budapest and, since 1973, a corresponding and since 1975 a full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . From 1972 Schwabl was co-editor of the Wiener Studien . He was buried at the Ober Sankt Veiter cemetery .
