Evangelist John, fol. 161 BC

The Carolingian Harley Gospel Book is an illuminated manuscript that was created before 800 at the Aachen court school of Charlemagne and is now in the British Library in London under the signature Harley Ms. 2788 .

The manuscript is characterized by its total of twenty illuminated decorative pages richly decorated with decorative motifs, plus it contains 366 framed text pages. It is the first completely preserved copy of a splendid gospel from the series of court school manuscripts.

The Gospels got its current name after its 18th century owner, Robert Harley, 1st Earl of Oxford and Mortimer , who acquired it for his Harleian Collection and with whom Parliament acquired it in 1753 for the British Library .
