Harry Beaumont (born  February 10, 1888 in Abilene , Kansas , †  December 22, 1966 in Santa Monica , California ; actually Louis de Beaumont ) was an American film director .

Life

Beaumont was one of the most prolific directors in Hollywood in the 1920s and 1930s. He made films for 20th Century Fox , Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Warner Bros. In the years before the First World War , he first worked in New York variety theaters before starring in numerous short films for the Edison Film Company from 1912 . During this time he also wrote his first scripts. In 1914 he first directed My Friend from India . Two years later he worked for Essany Studios. When he became known, he directed Lewis Milestone in 1924 Main Street , with John Barrymore in 1924 in the film Beau Brummel and in 1928 in the silent musical Our Dancing Daughters with Joan Crawford in the leading role. Finally, in 1929, Metro-Goldwayn-Mayer commissioned him with the first musical, The Broadway Melody of 1929 , to be filmed in sound , for which Beaumont received an Oscar nomination in 1930 . He shot numerous other sound films for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer until 1948, but these did not match his success in the silent film era . After his death at the age of 78, he was buried in the great mausoleum of Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale , California . Harry Beaumont was married to the actress Hazel Daly (* 1890; † 1987), with whom he had twin daughters.
