Harry Niemann (publicist)

Harry Niemann (born November 6, 1951 in Darmstadt ) is a German historian , publicist and non-fiction author .

Life

After graduating from high school, he studied political and sports science at the Technical University of Darmstadt from 1972 , which he completed with a master's thesis "On the problem of legitimation at Habermas and Bahro" . In 1987 he graduated from the University of Essen with the thesis “Traffic education through motorsport in school sport. Development and testing of a traffic education concept suitable for young people ” with Wolfgang Böcher .

From 1987 to 2011, Niemann was a freelancer for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in the technology and engine department . From 1989 to 2008 Niemann headed the historical archive of Mercedes-Benz AG in Stuttgart and was a. a. Head of Corporate History and Corporate Archives at today's Daimler AG. As part of this activity, he published numerous works on the history of technology, biographical articles and essays on the history of the company.

Niemann taught from 1993 to 2003 at the chair for the history of natural sciences and technology at the University of Stuttgart and from 2004 to 2011 held a teaching position at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg at the chair for corporate history.

Today Niemann works as a non-fiction author and journalist. Niemann is married and has a son.

Awards

  • 1996 ABB Science Prize from the Museum for Technology and Labor in Mannheim for the book "Wilhelm Maybach - King of Constructors"
  • 2007 “Cugnot Award of Distinction” (Nicholas Cugnot Prize) from the American “Society of Automotive Historians” for the works “Karl Maybach: His Engines and Automobiles” and “Béla Barényi: Pioneer of Passive Safety at Mercedes-Benz”
  • 2007 "Benjamin Franklin Award" from the "Independent Book Publishers Association" for the book "Karl Maybach: His Engines and Automobiles"
