Harry Reser

Harry Reser (born January 17, 1896 in Ohio , † September 27, 1965 in San Francisco ) was an American banjo player and band leader in the field of early jazz and dance music and author .

Live and act

Reser began his music career in dance bands in his home state of Ohio and in the Midwest. In 1920 he moved to Buffalo (New York) and then to New York City, where he worked as a session musician from 1921. Reser also recorded a number of solo banjo records, which showed that his instrument was not just a rhythm instrument . In 1925 he got the opportunity to become director and conductor of the Clicquot Club Eskimo Orchestra , which worked for the radio station NBC . This weekly show was sponsored by Clicquot Club Ginger Ale and soon made Reser known nationwide. In July 1925 he had his first hit in the charts with “Yearning (Just for You)”, followed by “Someone Is Losin 'Susan”, “Imagination” and “Piccolo Pete”; his last successful title was the hit "You're Gonna Lose Your Gal" in 1933 with Jimmy Brierly as the singer. His band included u. a. the jazz musicians George Van Eps and Jerry Jerome . 1933-35 he played with Jimmy McPartland . In the 1920s and 1930s he directed various ensembles for recordings under various pseudonyms, including a. for the Brunswick , Columbia , Edison, Gennett , Okeh , Paramount , Victor and Vocalion labels .

Later he worked mainly in television studio orchestras, in Broadway orchestras and wrote various textbooks for banjo, guitar and ukulele . He died of a heart attack in 1965 during an orchestral rehearsal before the Broadway performance of Fiddler on the Roof .
