Harry van der Kamp

Harry van der Kamp (* 1947 in Kampen ) is a Dutch singer with bass-baritone and bass voices . He is known for singing oratorios and lieder, especially in the field of early music .

Life

Van der Kamp first studied law and psychology in Amsterdam . He then studied singing at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam with Elizabeth Cooymans and Max van Egmond .

He excelled in the field of Renaissance and Baroque music and appeared in numerous baroque operas, including those by composers such as Francesco Cavalli , Stefano Landi , Antonio Cesti , Henry Purcell , Jean-Philippe Rameau , Reinhard Keizer and Georg Friedrich Händel . In the Nederlandse Opera he sang Monteverdi's operas L'Orfeo and L'incoronazione di Poppea as well as in Reves d'un Marco Polo by Claude Vivier . Bernard Holland describes his appearance as Zoroastro in Handel's Orlando with Les Arts Florissants under the conductor William Christie in the New York Times in 1996 : "Harry van der Kamp is the only man who can master Zoroastro's bass arias with the desired clarity and weight."

His over 100 recordings include important works by Johann Sebastian Bach such as some of his cantatas , the B minor Mass with Gustav Leonhardt , the St. John Passion with Sigiswald Kuijken and the St. Matthew Passion with Frans Brüggen . From the classical period, for example, masses and operas by Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart were on the program, and from the modern period works by Paul Hindemith and Stefan Wolpe . He has performed as a singer with well-known ensembles such as the Hilliard Ensemble , Musica Antiqua Cologne , La Petite Bande , Cantus Cölln , Concerto Vocale Cologne, Weser-Renaissance and Les Arts Florissants.

Van der Kamp was a member of the Cappella Amsterdam, founded by Jan Boeke , until 1975 and a member of the Nederlands Kamerkoor from 1974 to 1994 , serving as its artistic advisor from 1980 to 1987. In 1984 he founded the Gesualdo Consort Amsterdam , which focused on the performance of madrigals from the 16th and 17th centuries, by composers such as Carlo Gesualdo , Emilio de 'Cavalieri and Scipione Lacorcia , but also performed music from the 20th century . With the Gesualdo Consort he completed a first complete recording of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck's vocal works on 17 CDs in October 2010 , which was awarded the Dutch “Klassieke Muziekprijs 2010”. Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands received the first complete edition at a ceremony in Amsterdam's Oude Kerk on October 20, 2010. On the same day van der Kamp was awarded the Order of the Dutch Lion .

In 1994 Harry van der Kamp was appointed professor at the Bremen University of the Arts , after having been a lecturer at the Bremen Academy of Early Music since 1986 . In 1997 and 1998 he was visiting professor at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. He also gives master classes in various European countries and teaches at the Michaelstein Monastery Foundation .
