The Haseldorfer gray heron colony in Haseldorf in the Pinneberg district is one of the largest and most important breeding colonies of the gray heron in Schleswig-Holstein with over 200 breeding pairs .

development

The first gray heron colony was in a spruce stand in Haseldorfer Schlosspark around 1939 . After the Second World War, the herons were initially driven away or almost exterminated by the visitors in the park. The second colony was established around 1958 in an oak avenue in the former outer dike area next to the castle park, after egg collecting and regular hunting of young animals in the west of the country was discontinued. In 1977 the federal ordinance on hunting seasons was changedby placing the gray herons under protection all year round and no longer allowed to be hunted. This resulted in a rapid population increase to over 2000 breeding pairs in Schleswig-Holstein, which live in around 50 colonies and individual breeding occurrences. Since around the turn of the millennium, the population has remained at roughly the same level because apparently the habitat capacity has been reached.

In 2001, 284 breeding pairs with roughly the same number of young animals were counted in the Haseldorfer colony.

Protected areas

The area of the colony lies in the landscape protection area Pinneberger Elbmarschen (LSG 56-PI-05) and in the EU bird protection area DE-2323-401 Lower Elbe to Wedel .

From 1984 to 2007, the Haseldorfer gray heron colony was also designated as a species protection area. Until 2007, species protection areas were a protection category of nature conservation law in Schleswig-Holstein, which the highest nature conservation authority could set by ordinance. This protection category did not exist in this form in any other German federal state. The state ordinance of November 9, 1984 was repealed with the amendment of the State Nature Conservation Act in March 2007.
