The Hauke-sharks-Koog is one to 1,960 in the years from 1958 through diking won and 1,250 hectares large enclosed land in what is now North Friesland . The foreland has been used for sheep pasture since 1871. The project was implemented as part of the North program . The Koog is roughly bounded by Schlüttsiel in the west, Fahretoft in the north and Ockholm in the south.

The Koog is named after a protagonist from Theodor Storm's novella Der Schimmelreiter - the dike count Hauke Haien. The area is not an official protected area, only part of it belongs to the Ramsar area "Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea". Like the neighboring Fahretofter Westerkoog, it is primarily used for the purpose of bird protection . That is why the Koog has been looked after by the Jordsand association since 1967 . An information center on Koog has been located near Schlüttsiel since 1980.

The dike in the Hauke-Haien- Koog marks a turning point in land reclamation on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein : It was the first Koog in which the entire area is no longer used for agricultural use and settlement. Part of the Kooges is designed as a storage basin and functions today as a protected area for sea birds. During the bird migration, the Koog serves as a resting place for numerous duck species. However, it is also a breeding ground for terns , ringed plovers and avocets . About 500 hectares - less than half - are used as arable land.
