Coat of arms of the House of Barcelona-Aragon

The House of Barcelona ( Catalan Casal de Barcelona ) was one of the most important medieval families with rulers in large parts of southwest Europe.

history

Counties of Carcassonne, Rasès and neighboring counties around 790 to 850 .

The family most likely descended from Count Borrell of Osona and not, as assumed in particular in the older specialist literature, from Count Bello of Carcassonne . A document from 829 suggests that Count Sunifred I of Barcelona was a son of Borrell. Bello of Carcassonne was at best an ancestor of the house in the cognate line, since he was more likely Sunifred's father-in-law.

The descendants of Sunifred came into the possession of most of the Catalan counties , especially the counties of Barcelona , the counties of Urgell , the counties of Girona and the counties of Osona . In 1131 Berengar Raimund I (Berenguer Ramón I) became Count of Provence etc., in 1162 his nephew Raimund (Ramón) as Alfonso II. King of Aragón .

The family remained in the possession of Provence until 1245 (which they bequeathed to Charles of Anjou ), until 1410 in the possession of Aragon, the Kingdom of Mallorca , and then also Sicily (both went to the Trastamara line of the House of Burgundy-Ivrea ) and some of the successor states of the Crusades ( Duchy of Athens , Duchy of Neopatras ).
