House of History Baden-Württemberg (2006)

The House of History Baden-Württemberg is a museum of the state of Baden-Württemberg in Stuttgart . It is located on the “Stuttgarter Kulturmeile” in Konrad-Adenauer-Straße between the State Gallery and the Music Academy .

Emergence

The House of History Baden-Württemberg was founded in 1987. In 2002 the museum moved into its own house, initiated by Erwin Teufel and part of the Stirling - Wilford ensemble on Stuttgart's cultural mile. The planning for the building was completed in 2002 by the architects Michael Wilford and Manuel Schupp . At about the same time, the second construction phase of the Stuttgart University of Music was completed, which Wilford Schupp Architects also designed.

Permanent exhibition

Entrance area with showcases (2011)

The permanent exhibition is divided into three parts. In the entrance area, 26 objects are shown that are typical of Baden-Württemberg, one for each letter of the alphabet. In the second part, 200 years of state history follow in chronological order. Here objects are shown that tell the history of the states of Baden and Württemberg.

The rooms were staged strongly, that is, the perception of the visitors is strongly directed. The visitor should choose which objects he considers important; no interpretation of history is forced upon him. For the same reason, there are no text panels that classify the historical events. The visitor should form his own opinion. This is interesting and makes it possible to visit the museum several times because there is always something new to discover, but at the same time it can leave visitors who have little previous knowledge a little perplexed.

The chronological passage in the second part begins with the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803 and ends in the Museum of the Present, where objects are shown that are considered important today.

The following sections of the story are highlighted:

  • 1790–1815: Territorial Revolution
  • 1815–1848: Vormärz
  • 1848–1866: The revolution and its consequences
  • 1866–1914: Integration into the nation state
  • 1914–1945: The two world wars and the interwar period
  • 1945–1972: The construction of the Southwest State
  • 1972–2002: Parliamentary Democracy in the Media Age
  • What Baden-Württemberg means for its residents today is attempted by a multimedia presentation using the “depot in the heads” of each individual.

The theme park in the third part of the exhibition puts the latest in a historical context. Here, topics such as nature and the environment using the example of the Black Forest, economy , urbanization , religion , migration , partnership , marriage and family , science and research as well as relations with neighboring France are dealt with .

The concept of the permanent exhibition was developed by the studio of the Stuttgart scenographer and architect Uwe R. Brückner .
