There is a historic Church of England church in the village . The Church of St. Edward dates from the early 13th century and was expanded or rebuilt in the 15th, 16th, 18th and late 19th centuries. There are a number of interesting monuments made of brass and stone. The mansion adjoining the church dates from the Elizabethan period, it has been suggested that Elizabeth I should have lived there. The manor was also the residence of Mrs. Dent-Brocklehurst, the mother-in-law and grandmother of the current owners of Sudeley Castle . She was the mother of Mark Dent-Brocklehurst . In 1646 the successful writer and translator Clement Barksdale found refuge from the English Civil War in Hawley, taught at a private school and became principal in 1650.
