Hawthorne is a city in Los Angeles County in the state of California , United States .
The name of the city goes back to the daughter of Benjamin I. Harding , one of the two city fathers: Laurine Harding Woolwine's birthday was on the same day as the writer Nathaniel Hawthorne .
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the 84,293 inhabitants were distributed over 28,486 households. The population density was 5369 inhabitants / km². 32.8% described themselves as white , 27.7% as African-American , 0.7% as American Indian , 6.7% as Asian Americans , 26.3% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 4.7% to several ethnic groups on. 52.9% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 there were children under the age of 18 in 43.3% of all households and 16.8% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 68.7% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.94 and the average family size was 3.54.
30.5% of the population were younger than 20 years, 32.7% were 20 to 39 years old, 25.5% were 40 to 59 years old, and 11.2% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 31.5 years. 48.3% of the population were male and 51.7% were female.
The median annual income was $ 44,469, with 16.1% of the population living below the poverty line.

The US subsidiary of the heavy metal label Nuclear Blast is based in Hawthorne . There was also the Abacus Recordings label , which belonged to Century Media , Nuclear Blast's biggest competitor , from 2002 to 2007 .
Northrop Grumman has a large factory right next to Hawthorne Municipal Airport and Mattel has been based here for a long time. Hawthorne is also a location for CSI: Miami . SpaceX has its headquarters, headquarters and missile factory in Hawthorne, in the three-story hall where Northrop Corporation previously built the fuselage of the Boeing 747 . Another local company is the tunneling company The Boring Company, founded by Elon Musk .
