history

Hayes was founded after 1835 by former slaves as a so-called "Free Village" (Free Village). After slavery had been abolished in the entire British colonial empire on August 1, 1834 , many such villages emerged, especially in the interior of Jamaica. As a rule, large tracts of land were acquired by missionaries from different churches in order to divide them into small plots. These were then sold to members in order to consolidate the respective community.

In August 2007, Hurricane Dean caused significant damage to the city. The building of the local elementary school was completely destroyed.

economy

The Jamalco-Bauxite plant , the largest bauxite producer in Jamaica, is located in Hayes . In 2011 there were massive protests by local residents because the plant - according to the statements of the residents of Hayes - is poisoning the adjacent lakes. The management denied this.
