Heðin Mortensen (born April 7, 1946 in Trongisvágur ) is a Faroese politician and member of the social democratic Javnaðarflokkurin in Løgting . From the beginning of 2005 to the end of 2016 he was mayor of the Faroese capital Tórshavn . He was also President of the Faroe Islands Sports Federation ÍSF for 28 years .

Life

Heðin Mortensen was born in 1946 to Ethel Mortensen, b. Jespersen, and Martin Eliesar (Eli) Mortensen (both from Trongisvágur) were born. He is married to Hjørdis, née Egholm. Together they have three daughters Elin, Ann and Guðrun and their son Eirikur.

Heðin Mortensen is a trained auto mechanic and machine fitter, after which he continued to work as a vehicle appraiser and insurance salesman .

As a non-party, he was already a member of the council of the capital city of Tórshavn in 1973 , of which he is still a member. From 1988 to 2004 he represented the unionist Sambandsflokkurin . He then became a member of the social democratic Javnaðarflokkurin , who has been in charge of the capital since 2005 in a coalition with the republican Tjóðveldisflokkurin (with Jógvan Arge as deputy mayor). From 1980 to 1984 and from 1997 to 2004 he was Deputy Mayor. In addition, he worked alternately as chairman of the culture, social and building committee and was a member of the supervisory board of the national electricity company SEV .

From 1998 to 2004 Heðin Mortensen was a member of the Sambandsflokkurin in the Faroese parliament, the Løgting .

In September 2015 he ran again for the Løgting, this time as a member of the Social Democrats. He was re-elected to parliament with 392 personal votes . Even before the election, he had announced that in the event of an election he would not resign from his position as mayor of the capital city. He had received the necessary approval from the municipal council. In contrast, Jógvan Skorheim , the mayor of Klaksvík , who had also been elected to parliament, had to give up his seat because the Klaksvík municipal council refused to approve.

Heðin Mortensen was particularly committed to youth and cultural work in the capital and from 1997 to 2003 he was chairman of the Tórshavner Actors' Association. But he is best known for his contributions to Faroese sport. First he was chairman of Havnar Róðrarfelag (rowing club Tórshavn) from 1973 to 1979 and then from 1980 to 2008 president of the Faroese Sports Federation ÍSF.

Awards

Heðin Mortensen was honored in particular for his services to sport. Among other things, under his chairmanship, the number of sports departments in the Faroese Sports Federation ÍSF had increased from nine to 24 within 25 years.
