Hedningarna is a Swedish-Finnish pagan folk band that combines electronic and rock elements with traditional Scandinavian music.

history

Hållbus Totte Mattson , Anders Norudde (who was then called Anders Stake) and Björn Tollin founded Hedningarna in 1987. "Hedning" is the Swedish word for "pagan" or "unfaithful" and the musicians said that they opposed the prevailing ideas of the Swedish Folk music found unfaithful. They wanted to go far back to the beginnings of Old Norse culture and also play ancient instruments that are currently rarely used in Swedish folk music. Stake, a trained violin maker, also began inventing and constructing new instruments to create new sounds.

In 1988 Hedningarna composed and played most of the music for the play Den stora vreden (which means “The Great Wrath”), which was a great success. Her first album entitled Hedningarna was released in 1989 on Alice Records. In 1991 the group came under contract with Silence Records. They worked with the Finnish singers Sanna Kurki-Suonio and Tellu Paulasto . In September 1992 the band released the album Kaksi! ( Finnish : "Two"), which in 2018 was named the most important Swedish folk music album by the Swedish music magazine Lira. In 1993 Hedningarna received the Swedish Grammis (the equivalent of the Grammy ) for the best folk music album of the year. Kaksi! has sold 35,000 copies - a large number of folk music album sales in Sweden. The British DJ Sasha produced a remix of Hedningarna's Kruspolska , which hit the UK charts.

The third album Trä was released in September 1994. The Melody Maker wrote: "it may sound alien, but yet it sounds like the most essential music on the earth". Hedningarna performed on the second largest stage of the Roskilde Festival in front of an audience of 20,000. In 1995 Hedningarna toured Scandinavia and other countries. A collector's CD with pieces from Trä and Kaksi! appeared in the USA. In 1995 her albums were released in Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, Thailand, Great Britain and the USA.

The singers Kurki-Suonio and Paulasto took a break in Finland in 1996 on the occasion of the birth of a child and for study reasons. Paulasto decided to leave the band and in her place came Anita Lehtola , who had attended a class with Paulasto at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Mattson, Stake and Tollin worked on the new album Hippjokk . Rock bassist Ulf Ivarsson played the new bass mandora that Mattson had developed. The Finnish Same and joik singer Wimme Saari supported the vocals, as did the important Norwegian guitarist Knut Reiersrud . Johan Liljemark played the didgeridoo , which he had learned to play with the Aborigines while living in Australia . Hippjokk was released in February 1997. The band toured and performed with the singers at festivals in Spain and Belgium. Ulf "Rockis" Ivarsson became a member of the band. Anders Stake changed the name to Anders Norudde .

In the winter of 1998 the band traveled to the Russian part of Karelia to get inspiration for the new album "Karelia Visa". The album was recorded the following spring and summer. There was also a small concert tour through Spain in the summer of 1998. Ulf Ivarsson left the group after the recordings. Mattson and Tollin recorded a CD with violinist Ola Bäckström for the Virvla dance group . It was released on Silence Records in 1999. Sanna Kurki-Suonio released a solo album in Finland in the same year. Karelia Visa was released in 1999, accompanied by concerts in Scandinavia and a three-week tour in the USA.

Hedningarna played live to a dance performance based on her music developed by Flying Foot Forum in Minneapolis (USA) and danced. The violin player Magnus Stinnerbom joined the group. In 2000 Norudde released a solo album and percussionist Christian Svensson became a member of the ensemble. He replaced the founding member Björn Tollin. The compilation CD 1989–2003 was published in 2003. By this point in time, Hedningarna had sold around 150,000 CDs. The singers left the group in 2003 and Hedningarna has been an instrumental ensemble again since then.

In spring 2012 the album & was released, which includes vocal and instrumental pieces.
