Army research institute Kummersdorf
The Heeresversuchsanstalt Kummersdorf is a former army research institute in Kummersdorf-Gut , today a district of the municipality Am Mellensee ( Teltow-Fläming district , Brandenburg ).
history
In 1874, the artillery testing commission set up an artillery firing range in the Kummersdorf forest in what is now the Kummersdorf estate, previously: Kummersdorf firing range.
The Wehrmacht operated a development and testing center for new weapon systems and equipment on the site until 1945. Among other things, Wernher von Braun developed the liquid rocket engines A1 and A2 here until it was moved to Peenemünde in 1936 . For reasons of space, however, no larger rockets could be launched in Kummersdorf itself. From 1939 work was also carried out on the uranium project in Kummersdorf .
In addition to a large shooting range (2 shooting ranges: west approx. 7 km, east approx. 13 km) there was also a. the Gottow experimental station and the army's motor vehicle experimental station ( Verskraft ) , on which, along with other vehicles, all prototypes of German armored vehicles and captured tanks were tested.
In 1957 , the GDR built the Sperenberg airfield on part of the area for the western group of the Soviet armed forces .
The site of the Army Weapons Research Institute has been a listed building since June 2007 . Today the Kummersdorf Historical-Technical Museum is located here .
