The SAS half marathon in Heidelberg is a fun run organized by TSG 78 Heidelberg . Unlike in many other cities, it is held as the main run and is not just part of a full marathon. As such, with around 3500 participants, it is one of the larger ones . It is particularly popular because of its attractive route profile. This leads through the middle of the historic city as well as through idyllic forest areas. The participants pass many of the city's sights such as the Old Bridge , the Castle and the Philosopher's Walk .

The route profile has been changed several times since it was first held in 1982. Finally, the starting point was relocated because the capacity of the earlier start in the main street was exceeded by the rush of participants. The start has been ongoing since 2004 in the Friedrich-Ebert-Anlage towards Adenauerplatz. Via the Bismarckplatz , the runners reach the main street, pass the Universitätsplatz and finally leave the old town via the Alte Brücke . After a short round through the Neuenheim district , the participants can expect a first test of hardship: up the Philosophenweg they have to overcome about 160 meters in altitude. Then an idyllic forest path leads past the Neuburg Abbey to Ziegelhausen and back to around 110 m above sea  level . On the other side of the Neckar , in the Schlierbach district , there is another steep climb up to 224 m above sea level. At about this height, the castle is also passed on the southern side before returning to the old town for the last kilometer. The finish line will then take place after the final sprint on the main street at Universitätsplatz.
