Soccer career

1. FC Magdeburg

After his first years in football at BSG Aufbau in Hornhausen , Heiner Thomas signed up for 1. FC Magdeburg at the age of 14 and initially went through the youth teams up to junior age. Here he was noticed by those responsible for the GDR junior national team, was accepted into their squad and played 13 international matches by 1976. For the 1978/79 season he was registered for the first time as a striker for the FCM league team as a 19-year-old and had his first appearance on matchday 5, September 16, 1978, in the 1st FCM - Sachsenring Zwickau (5-0) match in the big league. He came on in the 63rd minute for midfielder Axel Tyll . By the end of the season he was used four more times in the league. In the next season, Thomas made eight league games, but had no chance to develop into a regular against the parade storm Halata , Streich and Hoffmann . The club management obviously saw it that way too, because from the 1980/81 season on, Thomas was only nominated for the junior team. Nevertheless, he received invitations for the GDR youth team, with which he completed six international matches. He played his last league game for FCM on December 11, 1982 in the encounter between Hansa Rostock and 1. FCM (3-2). At the end of the 1982/83 season Thomas Magdeburg left with a record of 16 league games (1 goal), five national (1) and two European cup games (0).

1. FC Union Berlin

With the beginning of the football season 1983/84 Thomas moved to the league competitor 1. FC Union Berlin. The 1.79 m tall striker was already in the starting line-up on matchday one, but only played 64 minutes. In the following three game days he was only a substitute, then had to wait until matchday 21 and was also only substituted on until the end of the season. There were also two appearances in the two playoffs for relegation against Chemie Leipzig, in which Union drew the short straw with 1: 1 and 1: 2. In the subsequent 1984/85 season in the second-rate GDR league , Thomas was only used twice.

KWO Berlin and Motor Ludwigsfelde

During the current season, Thomas moved to the third-class district division KWO Berlin in 1985 , and then played for the GDR division Motor Ludwigsfelde in the 1986/87 season . A year later, the 28-year-old Thomas was nominated for the 2nd team of the Ludwigsfelder and then no longer appeared in higher-class football.
