The school in 1915

The Heinrich Böll Comprehensive School is a general and continuing education school in Düren that has existed since August 1st, 1987. The comprehensive school is named after the Nobel laureate in literature Heinrich Böll (1917–1985), who lived in Langenbroich near Düren.

General

The former Eastern School was opened on November 16, 1912 as a Prussian teacher training college. From 1925 the Eastern School became an elementary school with up to 1,000 students. During the time of National Socialism , teachers were trained in the school. Two heads depicting Pestalozzi and Froebel can be seen above the left entrance to the teachers' college . Goethe and Schiller can be seen above the right entrance . In the former gymnasium prisoners of war were temporarily housed. In 1968 the Ostschule became a secondary school , which existed alongside the comprehensive school until 1991.

The headmaster's name was Hermann-Josef Geuenich (retired in 2018). In 1987 the school was presented as a comprehensive school consisting of secondary levels 1 and 2.

concept

In contrast to the three-tier school system with Hauptschule, Realschule and Gymnasium , one does not have to immediately decide on a type of secondary school after primary school. This can be done later. However, from Grade 7 and Grade 8, there are extension courses and basic courses that are differentiated in the main subjects.

degrees

The following qualifications can be obtained at school:

The comprehensive school is one of two schools of this type in Düren and cooperates with other schools in the Düren district .

Projects

The Heinrich Böll Comprehensive School has an open day every year . The school also has a dispute resolution project and a leisure area where the children and young people can read or play.

On March 11, 2013, Martin Schulz, the President of the European Parliament, visited the Heinrich Böll Comprehensive School and gave a lecture on the situation in Europe. He then answered questions from the students. The head boys Max Hellwig and Tim Justin Rabe thanked Martin Schulz with a present on behalf of the entire student council : An original Édith Piafs record from 1960. This event was mentioned in the Aachener Nachrichten, among others .

bunker

Former bunker entrance

To the right of the school entrance in the direction of the Bonifatiuskirche is a tunnel bunker , which was about 150 cm high. Remains above ground can still be seen. There was no connection to the school building. In the building, also known as crawl space, there were benches to the right and left. The square concrete block that was still visible was actually higher and served as an entrance to the bunker. The bunker has not been filled in, as a contemporary witness was able to report. In the 1960s, bone fragments were found in the open tunnel bunker.
