Heinrich Döring

Johann Michael Heinrich Döring (born May 8, 1789 in Danzig ; † December 14, 1862 in Jena ) was a German writer, translator , theologian and mineralogist.

He was best known as the biographer of the German classics, in particular as Goethe's first biographer.

Life

After an abandoned commercial apprenticeship and attending a high school in Danzig, Döring studied theology and philosophy in Jena from 1814 and soon became active as a writer under the influence of Goethe and others. During his studies he became a member of the original fraternity in 1817 . He became a member of the Society for All Mineralogy in Jena. After working as an editor for the Weimar Opposition Journal in 1817, he mainly worked as a translator ( James Fenimore Cooper , William Shakespeare , Walter Scott , Laurence Sterne and others), literary historian and biographer of German writers.
