Heinrich Hoffmann (born May 7, 1874 in Leipzig , † October 12, 1951 in Bern ) was a German Protestant theologian and university professor .

Life

Heinrich Hoffmann was the son of Otto Hoffmann and his wife Maria (née Lincke).

He enrolled at the University of Tübingen and began studying theology, which he continued at the universities in Halle , Leipzig , Berlin and Heidelberg ; he was a student of Adolf von Harnack and Ernst Troeltsch .

In 1903 he received his doctorate with his dissertation The Leibniz'sche Philosophy of Religion in its historical position to the Dr. phil. and in 1905 became a private lecturer in theology at the theological faculty of the University of Leipzig.

In 1912 he was appointed full professor of church history at the University of Bern , where he was rector from 1922 to 1923. In 1926 he also received the subject for the history of dogma .

From 1918 to 1920, 1924 to 1926, 1930 to 1932, 1938 to 1940 he was dean of the theological faculty.

Heinrich Hoffmann was married to Else (née Behrens).

Theological and literary work

Heinrich Hoffmann's intellectual history studies were primarily aimed at the historical and intellectual clarification of the relationship between the Reformation and the modern age. To this end, he published his work The Idealism and Christianity in 1934 , The Religion in Pestalozzi's Life and Thought in 1944 and The Idea of ​​Humanity in the History of the West in 1951 .
