Heinrich August Friedrich Philippsen (born February 26, 1858 in Schleswig ; † March 20, 1936 in Hamburg ) was a German homeland researcher who made a special contribution to the history and culture of his hometown Schleswig.

Life

Due to poverty he had to break off the visit to the cathedral school in Schleswig (O II) and in 1877 he became an actuary (clerk) at the district court. From 1884 to 1921 he worked for the Hamburg insurance authority in Altona .

The friendship with the local researcher Christian Nikolaus Schnittger (1812-1896), the author of the memories of an old Schleswiger , stimulated him to study his own local history. He put on an extensive library of Schleswig-Holstein literature and a collection of pictures. Most of his publications deal with the history of the city of Schleswig and its surroundings.

Heinrich Philippsen married Helene Jepsen on December 11, 1885, daughter of the grocer and mustard miller Ove Jepsen. The marriage had four children: Christian, Max, Drudea and Adelheid. In Schleswig a newer street in the old town Heinrich-Phillipsen-Straße was named after him in 1928.
