career

The trained high-voltage electrician moved in 1973 from his hometown club SV Eisenberg from the Donnersbergkreis to Kaiserslautern in the amateur team of 1. FCK. He gained playing experience in the 1st Amateur League Southwest and was first used by head coach Erich Ribbeck on the ninth match day of the 1974/75 Bundesliga in the Lauterer league team. On October 12, 1974, Weiler came on for Josef Pirrung in the 2-0 home win against Rot-Weiss Essen in the attack of the Palatinate. A fortnight later, on October 26th, the attacking talent also made his debut in the DFB Cup . In the first main round, Kaiserslautern prevailed with a 7-1 win against Spandauer SV, Weiler scored one goal. Regular players in the attack of the Betzenbergelf were Pirrung, Klaus Toppmöller and Roland Sandberg . Weiler made a total of 13 Bundesliga appearances during the season and scored one goal.

Under the responsible DFB coach for the amateur national team , Jupp Derwall , the young striker from Lauter made his debut on February 26, 1975 at the international match in Mannheim against France in the DFB amateur selection. On April 16, he was in the national team of amateurs for the second time in the Olympic qualifier against Spain in Bielefeld. But captain Egon Schmitt , midfielder Uli Stielike and striker colleague Ewald Hammes failed to score, the game ended goalless 0-0. A 2: 3 defeat a month later in Barcelona prevented participation in the 1976 Summer Olympics. The DFB rewarded its “Olympic amateurs” with two games at the beginning of July 1975 in Beijing and Singapore. In the 1-1 draw against China on July 5, Weiler stood out as a goal scorer for the German team.

When 1. FC Kaiserslautern reached seventh place in the Bundesliga in the 1975/76 season and moved into the DFB Cup final against Hamburger SV on June 26, 1976, Weiler only made four more Bundesliga appearances and was in the cup he was only called up in the first main round against VfR Mannheim. At the beginning of the 1976/77 round he was used again in the DFB Cup in the first round - again on August 6 against VfR Mannheim - and was also used in the UEFA Cup on September 15 against Famagusta. Since his prospects with the "Red Devils" were not good, he moved to FSV Frankfurt in November 1976 in the 2nd Bundesliga South. On Bornheimer Hang he made his debut in the team of coach Milovan Beljin on November 7, 1976 in a 2-0 home win against FK Pirmasens and was immediately able to distinguish himself as a goalscorer. From 1976 to 1978 - last game for FSV on October 28, 1978 against Wormatia Worms - he completed 51 second division games at FSV Frankfurt and scored twelve goals.

In November 1978 he accepted an offer from the relegation-threatened SV Darmstadt 98 from the Bundesliga and made his debut on November 4 in a 1-1 home draw against Arminia Bielefeld in the team of coach Lothar Buchmann at the Böllenfalltor. At the side of the teammates Walter Bechtold , Kurt Eigl , Jürgen Kalb and Gerhard Kleppinger , he completed 17 Bundesliga games, but the relegation to the 2nd division could not be prevented. For fourth place in the 1979/80 season in the 2nd Bundesliga, Weiler contributed two goals in 19 missions. In the course of 1981 - after a month-long injury break - he was declared a sports disabled person and ended his career in licensed football.

In the amateur football team, he ended his international career after his ninth international match on September 26, 1978 in Bielefeld against China A.
